The cushions are loose filled, fully stuffed to generous sizes, and the base is finished with brass castors, all of which gives the Wessex its classic look. The colour and choice of leather finish will depend to a large extent on your personal choice and the surroundings into which the Wessex will be placed. Leather has been used throughout the centuries and the processing of this has changed little over the years. We offer three types of leather from which you can choose, each differing in feel or look. Our standard leather range is our antique range; the process gives an authentic, antiqued appearance. For something more in your sofa or chair, the premier leather range is pre treated and we can offer a vast range of nineteen colours. However, the ultimate has to be hand dyed leather processed in a time honoured way, just as it has been for centuries. We consider that the hand dying of our fine grain leathers is the best that is available for our hand made Chesterfield products. The finishing of the leather in this manner is a time honoured and a truly traditional method of colouring the natural product and certainly gives individuality to the chesterfield.

The way in which our time served professional leather craftsmen colour finish this is the way that it has been done for centuries. Firstly the leather is vegetable tanned and then it is dyed by hand by the craftsman. It is then sealed and then carefully fitted to the chesterfield sofa or chair. This traditional way ensures that the leather has a finish which is deep and rich in colour; because the leather is fine grained it is soft to the touch and over time will develop its own individual patina and will improve with age, just right for a traditional chesterfield.

Modern contemporary settings lend themselves to the full range of colours that we can provide, 34 in all. Whichever you decide upon, you can be assured that it will receive dedicated care and attention to the finish from our professional leather workers.

At distinctive Chesterfields we are very proud of the two versions of Chaise Longue that we have made for many hundreds of customers. All of these people knew what they wanted but some had no idea how it became named. Basically it is French for long chair, but in modern France the term chaise longue can refer to any long reclining chair such as a deckchair, the name of course sounds a bit fancy but that’s the French for you! In North America they refer to it as a “Chaise Lounge” a mixed spelling and pronunciation, now established over there.

Perhaps the more popular of the two we manufacture is the Princess Chaise Longue built over a traditional hardwood frame, upholstered in classic leather and features a fully buttoned top. Because of the Victorian styling, we feel that our darker leathers are more suited to the look, but the full range of leather is, of course, available.

We place a great deal of emphasis on the way that we, at Distinctive Chesterfields, use traditional methods and materials throughout the whole process of making a Chesterfield Sofa or Club Chair which requires a great deal of skill, in many areas. Starting with the all important frame, which is hand made by time-served frame makers using high grade materials, through to the leather finish which is from specially selected hides. This is finished and cut by trained leatherworkers, who have a keen eye for only the best quality leathers, all in our traditional workshops. If the Sofa or Chair is upholstered, this is undertaken by apprentice trained upholsterers, all masters in their field.

We never cut corners at Distinctive Chesterfields, and you can be certain that you will never find PU panels, the best leather only, never rig or regenerated, split or demic leather, supplied in three finishes and 34 different colours. Our own experience and from what our customers constantly remind us, Distinctive Chesterfield Sofas and Club Chairs differ from others in the quality of the finish. This is no surprise to us and those who are aware of the careful way that we manufacture and importantly, finish the product which still involves traditional methods, unlike many other manufacturers, enabling us to constantly check the quality through all the stages.

An example is the way that we add the buttoning or studding which can involve as many as 300 to 1200 individual studs. We buff or rub off the piece which depends upon the selected leather finish following which this is sealed to protect the look which has been achieved.
