Making a piece of furniture to look like antique is known as antiquing, a process pioneered in England and having the benefit of looking old but being brand new.

The process of making a Distinctive Chesterfield Sofa whether this is to be antique or not, follows the same painstaking traditional way by professional craftsmen at every stage until the leather which is to be applied to the furniture is put through the first of stage of antiquing. This is a special treatment that makes the hide black in colour, which is subsequently fitted to the piece of furniture. The Scott club chair is one of many from which you could choose, this example has the usual hardwood frame, fully buttoned back which with three choices of leathers and many colour finishes, just shouts style. The base is sprung and features a square mahogany H frame leg. For that extra classy look you can add a fully buttoned arm and wing if you wish and add a matching Scott footstool. In spite of the many opinions about how the distinctive chesterfield got its name, and there are far more than we can describe, what is not in dispute is that a genuine hand made chesterfield, club chair, or office chair, will be finished in leather. Naturally the quality of leather used can vary between manufacturers and this is reflected in the look and feel of the finished item.

At Distinctive Chesterfields only the finest leather is used and before this can be carefully fitted to the frame it has to go through three finishing processes, rawhide, wet blue and finishing. Rawhide or raw leather is where it is cleaned and limed and when complete sent on to the wet blue process where this is bathed in a solution of chromium salts. Following separation into layers, the top layer being the most luxurious, it is tanned, dyed and lubricated to give that supple feel. Only then is it finished and ready to be used by our craftsmen.
